Abstract

Sanitation has a direct impact on health. Lack of awareness of the linkages between sanitation and community health and hygiene creates hurdles in effective implementation of sanitation programmes especially in rural India.

The Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) programme aims to eradicate the open defecation (ODF) menace by educating rural communities regarding the benefits of safe sanitation by building sanitation infrastructure. The fundamental right of every human being is to avail the secured, easily available and cost effective sanitation facilities proximate to their location. But in reality it seems to be a distant dream for the communities residing in the rural areas. The various schemes and programmes which are institutionalized under the flagship program of Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) have not yet achieved its objective of providing safe sanitation by building sanitation infrastructure for people living at the bottom of pyramid.
