Abstract

From Vedic period, Woman in considered as various forms of Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Durga.  But empowerment of women is still a myth and not achieved in reality.  Only a change in the mindset of the people can bring this.  Empowerment is a reality only by bringing in gender justice and emancipation of women.  A shift in the policy approach can be seen as concept of welfare in the 1970s…development in the 1980s…empowerment in the 1990s to justice in the 20th century. 


In India, women empowerment is heavily dependent on many variables that include geographical location, educational status, social status and age.  Policies on empowerment can exist at the national, state and district levels in many sectors including health, education, economic opportunities, gender based violence and political participations.
