Abstract

Walt Whitman is considered today as the greatest of American poets and one of the most original and stimulating of the poets of the world. Leaves of Grass is a masterpiece that he kept on revising lifetime. Song of Myself comes to us as a song of a singer of sensual pleasures. Walt Whitman was a mystic who never rejected the life of senses. He sings of both body and soul. He sings of sex because he sees that the real life beyond the earth is that of the spirit. The present paper highlights how Walt Whitman emerges as a poet of body and soul. His famous poem Song of Myself echoes his interest in the body and the soul.
