Abstract

Human Rights NGOs constitute the mainstay of the human rights movements. They are important agencies for protecting and promoting human rights. They hold governments accountable and promote transparency. In other words, they are instrumental in keeping the political process open and accessible. Domestic Human Rights NGOs also provide the ideological basis of local human rights ideas and practices. They are important linkage between the local and the global. They constitute important arena for understanding how international human rights norms are interpreted and put into practice in local conditions. Thus, studying domestic Human Rights NGOs is important for understanding local human rights culture and practices. There has been enough literature available on Kashmir conflict and its related aspects but relatively little or no literature is available on the role played by NGOs in promoting and protecting the human rights in the region. To highlight the human rights violation in Kashmir, many national and international organizations have been working there.
