Abstract

This article attempts to analyse the ways in which dalits negotiate with Space both in villages and cities. Space is not innocent information but it is loaded with cultural meanings and possibilities. The spatial demarcation of villages in terms of caste and the performance of caste in Educational space of the school are two examples of Space endowed with caste power. How do such spaces impact the birthing of dalit subjectivity and the socio-economic interactions between caste groups? Dalit assertion seems to be associated with challenging and rearranging the meanings of Spaces that dalits inhabit. The texts Karukku, Joothan and Untouchable Spring reveal a preoccupation with the significance of Space in dalit politics which this essay will analyse.
