Abstract

Shirley Jackson is an acclaimed novelist in the realm of English literature. She has contributed in the field of fantasy literature. She presented the blending of reality and fantasy in an exceptional way. In her novels The Haunting of Hill House and Hangsman she presented psychological issues of her characters rather than super natural horror. The aim of this paper is to scrutinize the role of world of fantasy in an individual’s life.Through her novels she tried to present the idea that when the social and moral order is fraudulent, it is impossible for human beings to remain alive. In these novels she presented the idea that when an adolescent is forcefully pushed in an environment which is undesirable for him then he will try to create an imaginary world in order to escape.
