Abstract

Thomas Hardy being a Victorian novelist has staunchly criticized the vanities of Victorian era. Through his writings he questions the prevailing beliefs about religion, marriage, morals and education causing miseries to the innocents. Along with the social evils fate and chance play a very significant role in his novels. Tess of the d’Urbervilles presents the aggravated and marred survival of Tess, an innocent young girl. From the structural point of view the narrative expresses the theme and major characters in the very beginning of the novel. Slowly the complicacies develop and the protagonist falls prey to the traps of society. The innocence, purity and honesty shroud the safe survival search of Tess for herself and her family. The negativity, confrontations and experience make her strong enough to avenge the tortures but after ruined and destructed dream of balanced and financial stability.
