Abstract

The Gurjara-Pratihara Empire was the last great empire in Northern India before the foreign i.e. Muslim invasions from the west. They had brought a political unification of the large part of Northern India. The Pratihara line of Kannauj was distinguished for its long succession of able rulers like Vatsaraja, Nagabhatta-II, Bhoja-I and Mahendrapala-I. As a matter of fact, the Pratihara kings ruled over a major part of Northern India from c. 730 A.D. to c. 1036 A.D. For them, the term 'the Maharajadhiraj of Aryavarta' (King of Northern India) has been used in the literary work of Rajashekhara.1
