Abstract

Biometric systems are automated systems to authenticate or identify the user of the resource or
service. A uni-modal biometric system focus on single input image. Multi-modal systems need more
than one input image. During enrollment phase, input images are scanned, pre-processed by suitable
methods, feature sets are extracted and stored in digital structure called template. During
authentication phase, users input is scanned, pre-processed to acquire feature set and compared with
stored template to determine the matching result. Uni-modal systems have disadvantages like
universality, intra-class variations, invariant input etc., so multi-modal biometric authentication
systems are better compared to uni-modal systems.Finger knuckle image and Retina image can be
combined to authenticate user for higher level security applications like access control to nuclear
plants, high caliber R and D labs, defense operations, immigration, border control etc. Also biometric
template security is necessary to keep enrolled user details safe, as it store vital information of the
user. In this research work, multi-modal biometric system is developed with Finger knuckle image
and Retina image and their template security by RSA encryption technique. The test results of
experiment carried out during research work has shown highest Genuine Acceptance Rate =98.66%,
False Rejection Rate =01.33% and lowest False Acceptance Rate = 00.33% when threshold value is
00.50.
