Abstract

T.S. Eliot’s literary background led to the subsequent development in his poems such as subtle conversational tone, mock heroic wit, turning ideas into sensations, symbolic associations, antithetic metaphor, juxtaposition and formation of patterns that take place in human mind. Eliot symbolizes the spiritual aspirations of a disintegrated Europe. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” presents emotional crisis. The poem is  a psychological drama that takes place in the subconscious mind of the protagonist. There is dramatic opening of the poem. The atmospheric details of the poem too is a representation of his inner self. There is mock heroic references to John the Baptist, Lazarus and Hamlet. With constant assertion, evasion and reassertion, this poem is considered as a psychological drama enacted within the mind of Prufrock. Eliot has expressed a modern sensibility and modes of experience of his own age.
