Abstract

A milestoneinitiative towards digitization of education i.e. National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT)had been launched by the Government of India, a decade ago. Under this mission, a number of projects had been undertaken for development of e-content in order to democratize the education by making it available and accessible to the large population of the country. In the present study, an attempt has been made to understand the progress made by some of the important projects of this mission viz., National Programme on Technology Enabled Learning (NPTEL), Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), e-PG Pathshala, DTH Programme – SwayamPrabha, Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM), National Digital Library of India, Vidya-mitra and Virtual Labs. The status of these projects in terms of the content digitized so far and their utilization by beneficiaries has been compiled using the secondary database available on respective websites of the projects and annual reports, newsletters and brochures published by Government of India. It has been found that these projects have performed well during last few years, however there is still a long way that needs to be covered in order to reach every learner of the country and bring about democratization ofeducation.
