Abstract

In the post-independence period, Indian writers writing in English or any other Indian language have raised concern in their works about the social evils prevalent in the society. The decline of social and moral values is also a frequent theme in Indian writing in English. Dattani in this play depicts psychological abuse in a very subtle form and brings to the fore how women in the society in general and family in particular, have been marginalized, enslaved and degraded in this male-dominated modern world. The play has depicted beautifully-how men enjoy the centre stage and women are destined to be in a marginalized position. KiranJhaveri in spite of being a well educated, smart and economically independent lady is destined for a marginalised status.Hasmukh does not have a healthy marital relationship with his wife Sonal. In fact, Sonal lives in the shadow of her husband who is utterly disappointed with her. Under the garb of patriarchy, Ajit is constantly marginalised and never allowed a space to grow in life by Hasmukh.Hasmukh lives a life of false pride: a kind of life in which not only women but also men are maltreated, humiliated and marginalised by the forces of patriarchy.
