Abstract

The article is an attempt to describe the traditional food habits, preparation and preservation of the native people of Northeast India. The data of the study was mainly based on the first hand information collected from the selected knowledgeable persons of the Kabui and Kharam communities of Manipur. For the study of Bodo tribe the required data had been extracted from the published works. The Bodos, Kabuis and Kharams have been survived in the region by exploiting the natural resources with the help of their time tested traditional knowledge since time immemorial. They had healthy life because traditional foods have rich nutrition and vitamin. They prepare and preserve food to use when there is food scarcity because of draught or in time of rainy season. But due to globalization many changes have been brought in their way of life including food habits, preparation and preservation of food. They now start taking the ready-made food as it is easily available and this takes them far away from the traditional food habits.
