Abstract

A detailed examination of problems and prospects related to Government efforts in accordance to water conservation and management in rural India is attempted in this paper. It is a doctrinal truth that life is possible only on earth in the entire universe and 'water' is an important element for 'life preservation’. In ancient times, natural water sources were available in rural India, but due to the industrialization, urbanization, modernization of agriculture, irrigation and power projects, these water sources are gradually being destroyed. Continuous decline in ground water level, contamination of water sources and wild exploitation of water are some of the important conditions related to water resources. In such circumstances, the availability of safe and clean water is a formidable challenge. Therefore, the need today is to modernize water harvesting infrastructure and proper water management so that every household in rural India can have clean and safe drinking water.
