Abstract

India is the first country in the developing world to initiate a state-sponsored family planning programme with the goal of lowering fertility and slowing the population growth rate. The family welfare programme continued to emphasize family planning services. Family planning to contain population growth rather than as a way to improve a family’s economic and social status by limiting births. The infrastructure for extension service in some of the more populous regions was lacking Indian government vigorously promoted sterilization as a means of population control, various stake holders have voiced concern about the National family Planning Programme.
