Abstract

The Indian MSME is set to be the backbone of Indian economy, providing it resilience to ward off global economic shocks and adversities. With around 63.4 million units throughout the geographical expanse of the country, MSMEs contribute around 6.11% of the manufacturing GDP and 24.63% of the GDP from service activities as well as 33.4% of India's manufacturing output. The country needs to recognise that digital technologies such as Big Data, digital platforms, machine learning/artificial intelligence, etc., and digitalisation of services (like finance, transport and retail) driven by them are transforming the manufacturing and agricultural production landscapes as well. While there are a number of cross-cutting issues that need to be addressed, the role of data and the hardware infrastructure of the digital economy call for prioritised attention.
