Abstract

Kumbh Mela holds a very important place in India. It has been declared as one of the intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. People from all over the world participate in it. It is held in four cities of India. Kumbh Mela is a very special mass gathering in the life of the Hindus. People reside near the bank of the river for a period of nearly 30-45 days and take holy dip in the river with the purpose of cleansing their conscience. Ones who practice this ritual are known KalpVasis. Being the part of such mass gathering for a common purpose reinstates the formation of identity at the social level.
