Abstract

The problem of growing ground water table depletion is one of pressing problems of India. According to reports of central ground water board shows a chronic threat to the agriculture, particularly the north- west parts of India.  The current paper examines the declining trends of ground water in different states of indo-gangetic plain of northern India. It is because of faulty mode of irrigation system which has given rise to over exploitation of ground water ground water by the farmers. Current study is based on secondary data, taken from the Ground water Cell and the Ministry of Water Resources of Govt, of India. The regional study of this problem shows that an alarming situation has been arrived  in some  such as   Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, as well as  and few states of southern India which reveal that a great threat has been given  to  the  agricultural,  industrial  and  human  consumption  and  made  too  difficult  to  coup  with  the situation. Objectives of the current study are aimed at reviewing the Indian scenario of the ground water in different states of India with special reference to southern Haryana. Lastly, there are some of positive suggestions which have been made so that a sustainable development position may be attained for water resource management in the coming years in the country and particularly in the south-western part of Haryana.
