Abstract

Looking at the ancient history of Bengal, one can trace that the present areas of Varendra-Pundra-Gaur  happened to be the center of culture and civilization. In other words, we can say that the history of ancient Bengal is in fact the history of Varendra-Pundra-Gaur and  vice versa. Therefore, there should not be any hesitation in calling Varendra region as the  cradle of the archaeological evidences of the history of Bengal. For, every relics of antiquity is a monument of the past, capable of disclosing a story, which is the story of  culture of its locality in bygone epochs of its history.1 However the Bengalees were quite unaware of utilizing archaeology as the major ingredient 2 of writing the ancient history. But it is a well-known fact that the historical study of any part of ancient India cannot realize its full potential on the basis of literary sources alone. Since the Bengalees were quite unaware of utilizing archaeology as the major ingredient  of writing their ancient history, there was no proper recurrent exploration made in order to assemble these evidences and hence the history of Bengal, specifically the ancient history of Bengalees, has not been composed.
