Abstract

A UN report projects that by 2050 3/4th’s of the world’s total population is likely to live in the urban area, with the largest urbanization rate in developing countries. Estimates of the population living in slums in India for 2019 are in the range of 110 million. The rise in the slum-living population has been uneven. As per the Indian census of 2001, the population living in slums had increased from 2.79 croresin 1981 to 6.18 crore in 2001. This increased to 6.55 crore by 2011 but is slated to cross 10 crores by 2019. Interestingly as less as only six states account for almost 70% of the total slum population.
