Yoga originated in ancient India. Indians are practicing yoga for centuries for physical fitness and emotional well-being. Now, yoga has spread all over the world and it is being practiced in all the countries. The present paper first traces the origin and development of yoga in ancient India. The benefits of yoga are innumerable and limitless as we are able to discover only few of them. The students learning in higher education institutions face many challenges and are under pressure to excel in academic performance. Naturally this leads to stress, anxiety and depression. Yoga can help student cope with stress and anxiety. It will also help them maintain optimal physical fitness and emotional well-being. In short, yoga plays a very important role in the holistic development of students. The present paper discusses how yoga help student achieve holistic development.
