Abstract

Prostitution is present in every society due to various reasons and there is a high demand prevalent in society and family traditions.. Poverty, illiteracy, as well as economic unemployment, family traditions, etc, are the leading causes through which women enter into prostitution. Purpose of this study is to highlight the reasons behind the prostitution and illuminate the role of family, society with patriarchic mindsets. This study has been conducted from madar Gate Street in Aligarh, where researcher interviewed with the 14 female sex workers to understand their experiences related to their entry into prostitution. The findings of the study point out that poverty and family culture are the main reasons behind this. Still, there is some other reason also, like marital abuse, sexual abuse and the death of a parent or husband for entry into prostitution. Most of the respondents who were interviewed stated that they were introduced by family their members into prostitution.
