Abstract

A transformation of women’s clothing from the Medieval to the Modern era - The corsets

Right from the medieval period through the Victorian period to the Jacobean, women have been using clothes as a source for appeal and style. The dressing sense of women often depended upon the social status of a family. This paper wants to highlight the changing era of how women clothing had been defined, sometimes as a law and then eventually as a social status and aristocracy. It also reflects on how women were viewed by men especially in their attire and how the corset had changed from being a symbol of attraction to a horrific health problem which caused severe damage to the woman’s body. The conclusion changes the way men started viewing women as there was a gradual progress made in society.
