Abstract

The society of Victorian era was progressive and capitalistic. Everyone in pursuit of money and wealth; the majority of livelihood earners were men and they were considered the head of their families. In short, the society was male dominated. This paper delineates the social circumstances through one of the famous novels of 19th century. The novel is a portrayal of harsh and brutal society. The classification of society propagates inequality among people. The protagonist of the novel is an innocent girl who faces torments and sufferings by her acquaintances. She learns many things and experiences unequal treatment throughout her life. Inspite of, she finds her true identity and freedom. She violates the social norms and stands against every evil even in indifferent circumstances. The novel not only a portrayal of society but a journey from darkness to light.
