Abstract

It has been generally assumed that Buddhism travelled along the Silk Route along with trade and commerce from India to China and then to Mongolia through the passage of Chinese Turkestan and Dunhang the main holding spot on the ancient Silk Route which is situated in the present Gansu province of western China. Though in the case of Mongolia, it is quite difficult to represent ascertain the exact date of the origin and emergence of Buddhism. However, to sum up as according to the Mongolian Buddhist tradition and sources, the Mongols came into
contact with Buddhism with broadly three different historical periods.
