Abstract

Perceptual defense is a term used to the fact that the perception of some stimuli requires longer exposure than perception of other stimuli. Individual differences are also seen to exist in the degree of the perceptual defense. Sometimes contrary effect has been found in perceptual defense experiments i.e. emotionally loaded words are more quickly identified than neutral words. The main aim of the article is to study the phenomenon of perceptual defense as a function of nature and language of stimulus words. For the proposed study, the mean recognition time for obscene words and for neutral words has been found. From the experimental results it is revealed that the mean recognition time for obscene words is quite higher than the neutral words.
