Abstract

Sagol Kangjei is the name of the game of Polo plying in Manipur, India where Sagol means Pony/ horse, Kang means a ball and Jei is a kind of hockey stick for hitting the ball. The tradition in Manipur says that the game of Sagol Kangjei the forerunner of modern Polo, has been introduced during the reign of king Kangba at around 3100 B.C. the internationally renowned game of Polo locally known as Sagol Kangjei originated in Manipur. This is also recorded in the Guiness Book of Words Record, 1991 publication (page no. 288) with Manipur as the Birth Place of Polo. Basically, this game is played at Mapal Kangjeibung which is described by Sir James Johnstone as “The famous pologround, where the best play in the world might be seen”.
