Abstract
Substance abuse problem has been present in Indian society since ages. As per the recent report by Government, North-West part of the country Punjab and Haryana have the highest prevalence of opioid use including Pharmaceutical Opioid, Opium and Heroin. The state wise variation is clearly visible in terms of opioid use with respect to north-west and north-east region having the higher prevalence compared to other part of the country. Among these states there is a slight variation in terms of using different types of opioids. The focus of this paper is to understand the current status ofopioid substance abuse in our country, what are the types of treatment available for this and what are the challenges in treating it?
