Abstract

Women held a prominent place in ancient Indian society. They were regarded superior to men.Medieval period was supposed to be the ‘dark age’ for Indian women as per historian views. Today, there are various legal, social and economic measures were initiated to raise women’s participation and their status in the society.Basically, Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs) are the non-governmental, organised collective with some pre-decided purpose. In India, the term NGO is often used interchangeably with voluntary organisations.. In the context of women, it means giving rights to women to lead their live with dignity.Right from recognising the need to protect the girl child in the womb to protecting career women in their work place, numbers of remarkable work have been done by NGOs.
