Abstract

Earlier, taking a vacation meant going with family or a group of friends to a different destination in order to relax, recharge oneself or simply to explore new places. However, recently people have started travelling solo; as an adventure, for some ‘me-time’ or simply because they couldn’t get a companion. Interestingly the number of female solo travellers has been increasing thanks to corporate jobs, movies based on solo female travel, female Instagram travel accounts, ease of access to information, hostels for girls and a desire to have a sense of freedom and independence. This is a study on 134 adult females (predominantly from Mumbai) exploring the frequency and major reasons for solo travel and the reasons that withhold females from doing so. This paper attempts to study the correlation between income, age and the frequency of such travels; how solo travel helped them and their experience in order to find whether travelling solo actually makes women feel empowered.
