Abstract

Kundrakudi is located near Karaikudi municipality in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most famous temples in the city. This is one of the significant temples for Lord Subramanya and presently, it is known as Kunrakudi. The legend reveals that the peacock of Lord Muruga becomes arrogant and he swallowed Garuda and Swan. Lord Vishnu and Brahma appealed to Muruga to get again their vahanas. Muruga cursed the peacock to emerge as a hillock. Repenting for the mistake, he executed an intense penance and was given back his shape. This is because the cliff looks like an upright peacock when viewed from a distance. The history of the temple rendezvous rear to more than 1200 years. It could have been build and maintained by the Pandya kings. It is whispered that Pandavas and Agasthya have worshipped here.
