Abstract

The paper addresses the core issues of accessing education of Sauria Paharia (Maler) tribals of Pakur district of Jharkhand. Paharias constitute as one of the important and major tribal population of this hill region. Though the literacy rate in India is increasing steadily but literacy levels among the tribals remain lower than the others. While overall literacy level of India is 73%, the literacy level for scheduled tribes remain in 59% and the literacy level among the Paharias is only 25.6% (Census 2011). Teachers engaged in teaching tribal children face a unique set of challenges, which emerge primarily from the unique cultural patterns of tribals. The study identified that the issue with teaching tribal children lies in their inability to adapt to nontribal school conditions.
