Abstract

Gorkhas is one of the latest immigrants in Manipur. They are widely distributed in different parts of Manipur and now becoming one of the distinctive communities of the State with the population of 46,498 as per 1991 census report (Vijayanunni,1991). This paper deals with Gorkhas immigration of different places of Manipur and their economy condition of life. It mainly focused in their manifestation of livelihood with gradually changing the systematic pattern of their lifestyle. Their settlement was encouraged and recognized a Gorkha cemetery at Dewlahland which is still under Dag no.473 as clearly shown in 1921 Tahasil map. The Gorkhas are found both in the plain and hill areas. In fact, those settling in the plain areas of Manipur are very much oriented to the Meitei way of life than those of the Gorkhas living in the hill areas of Manipur as there is little scope of direct contact with the Meiteis, the hill dwelling Gorkhas have more traditional way of life than those Gorkhas dwelling in the plain areas of Manipur. Their religion is Hindu and main occupation of the Gorkhas is agricultural works. There are still many Gorkhas who engaged in cattle rearing and also many Gorkhas had joined in active services and some of them are also work in Government and Non Government institutes and some are doing business.
