Abstract

India’s northeast region comprising of eight states including Sikkim occupies a unique place due to its geographical, cultural and historical features. The region has a variety of ecosystem, forest, hills and plains and is blessed with a wide range of biodiversity. Myerset all (2000) recognized Northeast India as the seven most bio diverse regions of the world. The forest of this region is rich in bio-diversity and timber.  According to survey report of FSI, Northeast region has 1,63,799kms of forest, ie 25% of the total forest area of India. (Roy & Joshi, 2010).Most of the states of Northeast have 50-80% of their area under forest. Thus, the region has a variety of eco system, forest type and bio diversity of the world.
