Abstract

The mind of a newborn baby is Tabula Rasa- a blank slate. It is the family that writes on the blank slate. The caste, religion, nationality, and gender roles. Family is a dominant social institution constructing gender roles in India. Present paper attempts at analyzing the role of joint family in building the gender biased roles among girl child from its birth. It further discusses the processes and customs that enforce these roles during adolescent and after marriage life. There are various factors in joint family that makes a female sex a stereotypes woman forcing her protecting and taking care of children, husband, members of in laws, customs of family, religion and caste and culture. This paper attempts to discuss the factors. The paper also aims to discuss probable solutions to lesser the biased gender roles of women in a joint family.
