Abstract

The labour market in the state of Kerala is, now, known for its brand of migrant employees. Some of the major productive sectors of the state are almost fully empowered with the human resources of other states of the country. It is found that more than two lakhs of migrants got employed in this small state where the population of the state comes around 3.4crores. In 2013, a study published by Gulathi Institute of Finance and Taxation reported that there were 25 lakhs labourers in total. The size of interstate migrants who came here other than through agencies is not available exactly. At present, apart from cities and towns, rural employment markets covering the agriculture sector, farming sector to the retail business and house hold jobs depend on the migrant employees. Of course, the state economy, in this context rolls on the migrant labor market. The government of Kerala is aware of this factor and takes number of measures and policies for the improvement of such labourers, accepting them as part of this state. But there are many anxieties and complaints also arise from different quarters of the state. Hence, this study is an attempt to indentify and analyzes the different aspects of migrant labour market focusing its quality, socio economic impacts and financial implications.
