Abstract

The present paper is a contextual analysis of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The analysis is focused around three basic characteristics of the novel which render it a Gospel like beaut i.e. its biblical narrative style and the passionate sufferings of its eponymous hero, combined with a plethora of Modernist setting and symbols. As the Modernist literature is broadly recognised as a search for a unifying religious symbol or a sort of waiting for a Grail hero who can offer himself as a scapegoat for the betterment of society. In the same way, the paper tries to answer the question whether the novel is a story of the rise and fall of a Christlike persona who suffered for others?
