Abstract
The present geographical entity called Kerala was divided into several tiny local or regional administrative units. Traditional handloom weaving was practised almost everywhere in the state, and it was practised by those people who came down to the land in several cultural waves. During the colonial period, their fortunes were hit adversely by the colonial interventions.
