Abstract

A developing country such as India has a huge gap among the different sections of society, particularly in terms of caste, class, and gender. In India, large sections of scheduled castes and tribes and backward communities witness high levels of illiteracy. Similarly, women's literacy is also very low. One of the primary aims of education is to reduce this gap by uplifting the backward sections of society. Furthermore, the purpose of any educational policy should be to alleviate itand bring them on a par with others. Nehru had famously said, “Everybody should be a producer as well as a good citizen and not a sponge on another person even though the other person maybe one’s own husband or wife.” He brought attention to the fact that educating the nation’s women would make them economically independent and “everybody should be a producer as well as a good citizen.”
