Abstract

The transgender communityalso referred asHijras, eunuchs,Kothis, Aravanis, Jogappas, Shiv-Shakthisetc (1) have a special status in the ancient tradition and other religious texts. The transgender representation in ancient tradition and the religious literature is unparalleled, there is a long recognition of gender(s) other than male and female in India.


Hijras were recognised as important constituent of our ancient custom and practises, but their status and conditions has been deteriorating.This paper is aneffort to seek review of literature on discrimination against transgender people, explores how discrimination influences their participation as a normal individual, discusses how institutional discrimination against transgender manifests within the criminal justice system and make recommendations for advocating rights of transgender people.
