Abstract

This paper, focusing on C.K. Janu’s life story, entitled When the Lost Soil Beckoned: Life Sketch Narrated by C.K. Janu, begins in the forest and is narrated in simple, honest language straight from the heart of an unschooled adivasi woman. There has never been a more honest autobiography in Malayalam. It holds up a mirror to the hypocricies of the so-called civilized world. It raises many social, political and ecological questions that will not be answered very easily. The initial struggle of these adivasis was against hunger. The adivasis cleared forests, burned low shrubs, and developed cultivable lands.
