Abstract

Animation movies have surpassed a long way from child plays to portrayal of serious themes capable of challenging gender binaries and patriarchal norms. Animation movies have shown their power in imposing ideas of hegemony and power on to the audience. One of the main strategies that are used in these films is colour. Skin colour is a topic that has decided social roles and caused discrimination all through the history of mankind. This article takes three movies Snow White and the seven dwarfs (1937), Pocahontas (1994) and Angry birds (2012) and would analyse how the factor of colour was employed to transmit certain ideologies into the audience. There are different aspects to analyse while we consider the factor of colour. The colour of the characters and the colours used by the animator into the backgrounds of the film. Colour is an important factor which is used to spread ideas, ideologies and beliefs. Animation movies are an important source of transferring these ideas into the audience. The impact of colour has many implications. Colour is a pure product of social constructions. It is also a factor that helped to promote conventional beauty standards .
